Rice was one of those places I always told myself I would try out one day while driving past it all the time. So when Groupon had a deal, I immediately bought it. I had high hopes and was excited for dinner that night!
But Mr. Munchimunch and I had a bad feeling the moment we walked into Rice. The place was completely empty on a Saturday night.
As usual, I ordered hot green tea. I like how the green tea came out in a cute teapot.
To start off, we ordered Croquettes, Japanese style crispy fried potato cakes. I rarely have croquettes so whenever I see them on the menu, I order it. While Mr. Munchimunch didn’t like them at all, I enjoyed them. Crispy fried on the outside without being greasy in a sweet dipping sauce.
While waiting for our main order of sushi, our waitress brought out our dinner plates. The car enthusiast in me squealed in excitement over the rotor shaped dinner plate. It’s just like the rotor in a rotary engine! Click here for a picture of a rotor inside a housing for reference.
It took a really long time before our order arrived. Way too slow for service at a restaurant that only had four tables to serve.
Mr. Munchimunch ordered the Jazz Roll, tempura fried soft shell crab and cucumber topped with salmon tartare and eel sauce, and the Spicy Calmari Roll, deep fried calamari, avocado, cucumber and sprouts wrapped in soy paper and topped with spicy mayo and eel sauce. I ordered the Titan Roll, tempura shrimp, tempura yam topped with albacore tuna, fresh tuna, tobiko and eel sauce, and the Prozac Roll, shrimp tempura, fresh tuna, cucumber and baked eel topped with eel sauce.
We both did not enjoy our rolls. The rice and the sushi did not taste fresh. The rice probably sat in the rice cooker for an extended period of time and dried out and the fish had a chewy texture. After a while, we chased the waitress down to ask for our bill. I declined dessert, which is something I rarely do, and we left the restaurant in a hurry.
I can see why Rice constantly has Groupon deals for sale. My high hopes for this Japanese restaurant were crushed by the lack of good quality in food and service. I will not return.
