When a brand new Chinatown was being built for Salt Lake City, I was beyond excited. I paid attention to the construction which lasted about a year or so and was looking forward to walking around the new grocery store and other stores and restaurants.
Even though Ocean Mart is a closer Asian supermarket to me, I don’t mind stopping by Chinatown Grocery every once in a while because they have different items in stock. I’ve also eaten at Hot Dynasty (I’m never going back due to the awful service received) and Ho Mei BBQ. I’ve yet to try Chinatown Eatery although I have heard good things.
My friend and I decided to grab a quick dinner at Ho Mei BBQ to give it a try.
We started off with iced Hong Kong Milk Tea!
As soon as I opened up the menu, about ten dishes jumped out and called my name! Everything listed looked great, but I decided on something simple and classic. Roast pork and roast duck over rice with a side of choy sum. The roast pork wasn’t as tasty as my homemade one, but it hit the spot. The roast duck was juicy with a crispy skin, oh the skin! And the soy sauce that came with the dish is to die for. I don’t know why, but the soy sauce that usually comes with these type of dishes always taste better than regular soy sauce. I swear, they must put some sort of sweet drug in it…
My friend ordered the Beef Pickled Cabbage in a Black Bean Sauce with rice. I don’t remember trying her dish, but it smelled amazing. She enjoyed her dish greatly and had enough leftovers for lunch the next day.
I’ve been back to Ho Mei BBQ a few more times and always try something new. Things are reasonably priced and it never disappoints. I’m so glad this place has opened up so I can satisfy some of my Chinese/Cantonese cravings!
I highly recommend Ho Mei BBQ for some authentic Chinese (with lots of Cantonese influence) food
